The Knights Templar and the daVinci Code

May 1st, 2008 by latenskaret

By David Rankin Rosslyn Chapel , near Edinburgh , Scotland has long been associated with the Knights Templar , an ancient order going back to the days of the Crusades. In the 12th century the grand master of the order was married to Katherine St Clair and two of the grand masters in the 13th and 14th centuries were members of the St Clair family. When the order was persecuted by the Pope in the early 14th century, some of the Knights escaped to Scotland (where Robert the Bruce had been excommunicated and so did not proscribe the order). The chapel features as a key location in the film the daVinci code based on the the book by Dan Brown . Rosslyn Chapel was founded in 1446 by Sir William St Clair, the third and last Prince of Orkney. The chapel took 40 years to build and was originally planned to be part of an even larger building. Sir William drew the design of the chapel and the ornate carvings on timber boards which the masons then copied. The Chapel has been described as a Bible in stone because of the large number of religious symbols and images featured in the stonework . There are numerous examples of ” Green Men” throughout the building . A number of the carvings at Rosslyn have Templar or Masonic connections and a sealed vault in the Chapel is said to contain religious relics - everything from the holy grail to the skull of John the Baptist have been suggested. Now a group of modern Knights Templar want to survey the vault using hi-tech radar scanner to create a three dimensional picture of the contents. Of course, they still have to get permission from the trustees of Rosslyn Chapel and they are concerned about conservation of the ancient monument. David Rankin is a travel writer and photographer . Discover What You Really Want To Do

April 28th, 2008 by latenskaret

By Graham Harris Are you doing what you really want to do or did you just fall or wander into the job you now have. As a friend of ours once said, I am one of twenty two doctors in our family. The only ones in our family who are not doctors are the dogs and cats. Did you decide what you wanted to do or are you one of a growing number whose work was dictated by circumstances or their parents? The question is not what are you doing and who put you there but; are you happy? If you are not doing what you really want to do then the chances are that you are unhappy and that is affecting your health and relationships as well as other parts of your life. As John D Rockefeller III stated “The road to happiness lies in two simple principles: find what interests you and that you can do well, and put your whole soul into it every bit of energy and ambition and natural ability you have.” The problem is that although we are aware, deep down, of what we want to do the hard part is putting those thoughts into action. Actually doing it. Perhaps you are trapped in the thinking process that says; well I cant really change. How will I pay the mortgage? How will I pay the school fees? How will I .. Or perhaps your thinking says it is better the devil you know than the one you dont. Or are you thinking well Im lucky really I have a regular job that pays sufficient salary (just about) and others are not as lucky as me? Whatever your story. Just stop for a moment and ask yourself: What is really driving me? What makes me do what I do? Sarah, a friend of ours, is 57 years of age, single, an only child with no parents alive and no children. In our language, she is the end of the line. A successful sales manager for an international company. But her world has just collapsed. A week before Christmas she was made redundant with little or no warning. She has given her life to the industry she worked in and feels very let down, bitter and disappointed. After all, she had it all worked out. Retirement happens at 60, the mortgage will be paid off, the pension fund will start to pay up and then she will be able to decide what she wants to do in the future. But that hasnt happened. She is three years short and needs work. Her initial calls to her vast network of friends and colleagues has resulted in either, sympathy, not returned or Im sorry butyou understandwe need ur hmph younger people On the other hand there are those who kept her confidence up by inviting her for an interview only to find on arrival that either there was no job or ur hmmph we found someone younger. So Sarah was forced to ask herself: Where do I go from here? She doesnt want to retire.shes too young for that!!! The lack of response from her industry and so called friends and network has forced her to ask herself, What do I really want to do? If I cant continue the habit and stay in the industry, What do I really want to do? She started to ask herself; What really drives me? What made me do what I did? What did I love most about the job? Gradually she had to acknowledge that most of her working life had been driven by fear. Fear of not being able to pay the mortgage. Fear of getting into debt. Fear of failing a credit check. Fear of being a failure. Fear of having to be on her own. However, she also realised that what had driven her to stay in her industry all her life was the love she had for putting teams of people together. The love of developing people who felt they couldnt achieve. The love of being a nanny, nurse, coach, counsellor etc to young and developing sales teams. The enjoyment she got out of caring for others, steering them, cajoling them. It was almost that over the years her sales teams had become her family and she enjoyed that. Whats more she found that her greatest enjoyment had come from turning around ailing, little known or unsuccessful products. Now she started to work with a new vigour. Instead of being an old or aged, victim, with little or no hope of getting work. She started to scan the ads and rewrite her CV as a caring, coach, who loved developing and growing sales teams of young people. Someone who could be relied upon to introduce vigour and sparkle to old, tired and little known products. We dont have a happy ending to the story yet, but Sarah had three interviews last week and one company has called to see her again as they are interested in what she might have to offer them. We are all keeping our fingers crossed. And Sarah? She has a new spring in her step. A belief that she has discovered what she really wants to do. She is constantly focussed in the positive. We have no doubt that she will get what she wants. The moral to the story. The answer is always inside yourself. The answer is in your thoughts. Look deep inside yourself. Ask yourself; What really drives me? What deep down is the reason Im on the planet. Dont cheat yourself: stay with the question.. You will know when you find it because your whole body feels: yes Ive got the right answer. Then: Just accept it, change your thoughts and believe in yourself. And watch life change. Cryptozoology And The Beast Of Gevaudan

April 26th, 2008 by latenskaret

By Robert Benjamin The Beast Of Gevaudan, was seen during the years 1764 - 1767, in Gevaudan France. The creature was reported being as big as a large calf or young cow, it was covered with a fur that was reddish, the head was big and wolf-like, and more brown than the rest of the body, the jaws were always gaping, ears short and straight, chest white and very broad, tail very long and thick with the tip white, the back paws very big and long, according to some having hooves like a horse, those of the front were shorter and covered with a long fur, having six claws to each paw. Once when the creature was sighted crossing a river, it raised itself on its hind legs and waded over like a human being. Furthermore it was very agile and extremely strong. It was sometimes sighted in locations very far apart on the same day. When hunting it crawled almost with its belly to the ground. One shepherd claimed it could stand up on its rear legs and was strong enough to lift an adult sheep with its arms. Dogs fled in terror from it as did most other animals. The creature often made a sound more like a horse neighing than a wolf howling, but sometimes it would make a growling sound like those of a mean dog, or one in pain or distress. There were two mysterious cases reported during the times of the creatures attacks. Three women were going to church near the wood of Favart, when a dark man offered to escort them through the woods. They refused and before leaving he touched one of them with a fur-covered hand. Soldiers arriving on the scene just after the incident warned the terrified women not to go into the woods, because the creature had just been seen there. Two women of Escures also on the way to church had a similar experience in an area where, unknown to them, the creature had just been seen by several people. This time they saw that the man accosting them was covered in fur only when his shirt blew open in the wind. It was said at the time the creature was called an instrument of the Devil, and besides killing, was trying to stop people from going to Mass. One can certainly see the spiritual connection to the beast if we are to believe the stories of the meetings that occurred between the women and the strange man, who had fur covering him. Since spiritual creatures can assume any form, it would of been nothing to change from the wolf-life beast into the form of something humans would of not found so scary, only to change back into the beast once inside the dark woods. One reason the creature would of done this is the following. I have read numerous times when there has been an encounter with a ghost or demon in a haunted location, the spirtiual being draws energy off their victims or those near them. The women would of became frightened easily once inside the dark woods, especially when they would of noticed the man was covered with fur, etc. Once they became scared and released their psychic energy given off in fear, the creature could drain and use this energy to change and keep it’s varied forms more easily, like a demon or ghost does when it drains energy from frightened people. There is a website that describes this and numerous other creatures of Cryptozoology in detail. Skin Care in Ayurveda

April 24th, 2008 by latenskaret

By Awinita Smith Skin is the seat of a sense organ. The senses of touch, temperature, pain, pressure are felt by it. A healthy skin always looks attractive even when devoid of make up. The first step in the holistic ayurvedic approach to skin care is finding out your ayurvedic skin type. Vata skin is in generally dry, thin, delicate and cool to the touch, easily gets dehydrated, and is very vulnerable to the influence of dry windy weather. Vata skin may age faster, and tends to be dry, rough and flaky when out of balance. Pitta skin type tends to be fair, sensitive, soft, warm, and of medium thickness. Less tolerance to hot food, less tolerance to fieriness in temperament. Pitta skin types tend to be more prone to freckles and moles than the other skin types. When out of balance, Pitta skin can flare up in rashes, rosacea, acne, or sunspots. Kapha skin tends to have all the qualities of water and earth — it can be oily, thick, pale, soft, cool and more tolerant of the sun. Kapha skin tends to age slower and form less wrinkles than the other two types. Kapha skin types may struggle with dull complexion, enlarged pores, excessive oil, blackheads, and pimples, moist types of eczema and water retention. “Combination” skin can be Vata-Pitta, skin that is both dry and sensitive, Kapha-Pitta-skin is oily and sensitive, and Vata-Kapha- skin that is generally dry with some oily zones. Skin Care tips for your ayurvedic skin type Vata Skin Care For Vata skin to stay youthful, skin care products used should be very nurturing. They must include some essential oils or herbs in combination, which can nourish the skin and rehydrate it; otherwise it may be susceptible to wrinkles and premature aging. Going to bed on time, eating regular meals, and following a regular daily routine are essential components of a holistic approach to Vata skin care, as are eating foods that help balance Vata and nourish the Vata skin. Pitta Skin Care The Pitta skin type needs both cooling and nurturing. Use skin care products that help enhance resistance to the sun. Avoid tanning treatments and therapies that expose your delicate, sensitive skin to steam for extended periods of time. The ayurvedic herb Flame of Forest can help protect Pitta skin from photosensitivity. But like other ayurvedic herbs, it needs to be used in combination with other herbs for a balanced effect on the skin. Kapha Skin Care “Kapha skin, because of its thickness and oiliness, is more prone to accumulate ama — toxins under the skin. People with Kapha skin need to do detoxification on a regular basis, both internal detoxification and external detoxification to flush toxins from the skin,” says Mishra. Scrubbing the skin with gentle exfoliating clay can help external cleansing. Kapha skin types may also need to take herbal formulations to cleanse the skin from within. Lose Weight and Burn Fat with One Simple Eating Principle

April 22nd, 2008 by latenskaret

By Greg Ryan Fifteen years ago the doctors suggested that we eat pasta as a good healthy food. They also thought we would possibly lose some weight by doing so. Now we are eighteen percent fatter. Why? While pasta is not a bad food, we have altered our eating habits slightly. If you completed a food log for a week, you would see that your plate would consist of at least half being in one food group. Most of our diets are lopsided. This eventually slows down the digestive process. When people like me ask you to eat a balanced diet what does it mean? It could mean different things. I call balancing your foods, synergizing your food groups. Synergize means; the action of two or more forces. When is a car easier to turn the wheel? When you are sitting still or when you are going down the road? Yes, moving down the road. When you eat different types of food they feed off the others. This means the digestive system works more efficiently, thus steering the car much easier. Here are some eating suggestions to allow your body to synergize your food into fuel instead of fat: 1. Try not to eat breads with pastas. 2. Put carbohydrates, good fats, veggies, and proteins on your plate each time. 3. Wine and pastas are killers. 4. Never eat more than half your plate in complex carbohydrates or sugars. 5. Fish and veggies are good combinations. 6. One glass of wine at a time The general rule is to mix it up on your plate. If the plate is lopsided the tires on your fat burning machine will go flat. Foods work well together, not by themselves. START LOSING WEIGHT THE RIGHT WAY FOR GOOD TODAY! Adirondack Chair Cushions-Comfort and Style

April 20th, 2008 by latenskaret

By Jennifer Akre Once youve chosen the right Adirondack furniture for your outdoor area, youll want to enhance its comfort and beauty with cushions. Not only will cushions make your seating more comfortable, but the patterns in your Adirondack furniture cushions will be one of the focal points of your dcor in your outdoor room. There are a wide variety of Adirondack chair cushions available ready made. You can choose from solids, stripes plaids and florals. Most come in standard sizes that will fit many patio furniture styles. Some patio furniture cushions are reversible, as well, allowing you to have two different looks with the same cushions. Choose patterns that complement the style of your furniture and the overall style of the room, as well as ones that complement the colors in your outdoor room. Ready made Adirondack chair cushions are typically sewn from weatherproof or weather resistant fabrics, so that they dont have to be brought in when it rains. However, its critical to check whether or not your fabric is waterproof before you buy. Not all Adirondack chair cushions are designed to be left out in the weather. If you want to create custom Adirondack furniture cushions so that they will match with other portions of your dcor, you can consider making your cushions or having them made by a seamstress. If your chosen fabric is not weather resistant, consider having the cushions laminated after theyre completed. This will allow you to simply wipe off spills with a damp rag, and will keep the patio furniture cushions protected from the weather. Laminating your cushions will cost you a bit more, but its well worth the money, considering that it makes your fabric choices virtually limitless, and that it protects your cushions for a lifetime. Adirondack chair cushions are an important choice in your outdoor dcor. Choose wisely so that your outdoor room will be a beautiful reflection of your outdoor style. Germinating Seeds Hydroponically

April 19th, 2008 by latenskaret

By Katherine Keleher Germinating seeds hydroponically has several advantages over using soil. Many common diseases can be avoided because the hydroponic medium is clean while soil may contain fungus or insects that can harm vulnerable seedlings. Root rot can also be avoided by using a good hydroponic growing system. The area where hydroponic growing really shines over using soil is control of the growing environment. With hydroponics, the gardener is no longer at the mercy of the soil’s nutrient or water content. Every aspect of the plant’s growing conditions can be controlled by the grower, not Mother Nature. This can be a tremendous advantage for young seedlings because they will get the proper nutrients right from the start of their life, leading to much healthier plants in the long run. Choosing a Growing Medium for Germinating Seeds While germinating, seeds require both oxygen and water to sprout. This means that your growing medium must provide sufficient amounts of both to the seed or it will not germinate. Porous mediums such as perlite, rockwool, or vermiculite will do this along with having great drainage capabilities. Rockwool cubes can be used for quick set up and easy transplanting as the seeds sprout and grow into full-size plants. Simply place a larger cube around the cube holding the plant. The roots will expand and grow through both rockwool cubes, allowing your medium to easily adapt to the size of your plant. Perlite makes another good growing medium for germinating seeds because its porosity allows for good drainage and oxygen availability. Just be sure to use the gardening-grade perlite rocks and not the finer grade masonry-quality powder. Plant your seeds about a half to one full inch deep in the perlite medium and cover them with a thin layer of perlite. The easiest way to set up a seedling tray with perlite is to use a plastic tub or similar container covered in black plastic to ensure that no light will penetrate to the roots of your plants. Add a drain hole about an inch from the container’s bottom to cycle your nutrient solution through while keeping a minimum level of solution available to the plants at all times. Nutrients for Germinating Seeds Many seeds contain nutrients within their shell to provide initial nourishment to jumpstart the germination process. However, this is not true for all species. Orchid seeds, for example, contain very little nutrients, so be sure to research your particular plant before setting up your garden. To avoid stressing the seed at a vulnerable point, it is best to use a medium that is pre-prepared with a low concentration of nutrients. The first few initial waterings will give your seeds a small dose of nutrients until it is ready to absorb more. After a few days, switch to a regular nutrient solution in your water, but keep it at a lower dose than normal until the seed shows significant growth. Once the plants have developed strong, healthy stalks, you can change them over to your normal feeding and watering program and use your seedling tray for the next batch of germinating seeds. College Roommates Part I - Dorm Life

April 16th, 2008 by latenskaret

By David Lithman Whether you are moving into the dorm as a freshman, or a senior looking for a nice house close to campus, odds are you will be living with roommates. There are very few college students who live by themselves, mostly because it is too expensive. In college towns, rent for a single apartment can reach up to $750 a month. It might not seem like a lot, and maybe it isnt if your parents are paying for it, but for the majority of students $750 a month is not reasonable. The solution to lower rent is living with roommates. In this article I will talk about the pros and cons of living with roommates, how to find roommates, and Ill share some of my experiences along the way. This will be a two part post due to its length. Part I will discuss dorm life, while Part II will discuss life after the dorms. Since I just graduated from college in April of 2005, I consider myself somewhat of an expert in the college living life. Not much has changed in the few months I have been on my own. I am living by myself for the first time in my life, and let me tell you, it is quite different than being in college. Most students start off their college experience living in the dorms. When I moved in, I elected to live in an old fashion dorm. Twenty some odd rooms on the floor with one large communal bathroom. The guys section was separated from the girls section by a lounge/kitchen with one stove, one oven, a few couches, and a TV. Not quite the same as living at home with your own bedroom and bathroom. Most dorms (at least the old fashion ones) do not have single rooms. Everyone has a roommate, and sometimes there are triples in one room. Most schools give you the option to choose your roommate or have one randomly assigned to you. My freshman year, I chose to live with a friend. Make sure you are good friends with this person or else you may end of wanting to kill each other. I have so many friends that wound up hating their roommates. They were friends on the outside, but in the room it was hell. I was lucky for the first semester of college. I got along with my roommate for the most part. We led different lives, which was a good thing. I was on the meal plan and he wasnt. We took different classes at different times and hung out with different people too. In my opinion this is how it has to be if you choose to live with a friend. You cant be too close or else your friendship will crumble. (Please note that the dorms I am talking about are the ones that are about 12×12 with two twin beds and two desks and enough room to stand up. The new age dorms where people have their own rooms and bathrooms are totally different.) My friend who I roomed with ended up transferring to a new school after our first semester for various reasons. I thought I had it made in the shade. Would the school not know? Would I get the room to myself? The answer was no. Enter Kraut (my new roommate from Germany). He was American, but grew up in Germany on a military base. This was one of the best and worst experiences of college. Living with a complete stranger who is the complete opposite of you. This is every incoming freshmans worst nightmare. Andrew (who I referred to as Kraut… please dont take offense to this. It was just a friendly joke between us) moved in with me because he was voted out of a triple dorm room by his previous roommates. Wow. After living with him for a semester, I know why they voted him out. First off, he was in the ROTC. I have nothing against being a proud American and wanting to serve in the military, but when you have to wake up at 4:00 AM every morning to go run with that squadron, thats when I start to lose it. His alarm would go off at 3:45 AM everyday and he would snooze for about 30 minutes. He never went to class, so he was there to bug me on all my time off. He played Counter-Strike (which Im sure all you guys know what it is. Counter-Strike is a terrorist/counter terrorist video game). He played it all through the night with the sound up. You would think me dorm room was a war zone. I tried to take him out with me, or eat lunch with him at the cafeteria, but I just couldnt take it. I learned a lot from Kraut and will never forget him. My most memorable moment is when I turned the volume all the way up on my PC and blasted the Salute Your Shorts theme song right in his ear while he was sleeping. I captured it all on video. He flicked me off and went to bed. I havent seen Kraut since I moved out of the dorm. Some Pros and Cons of living in the dorms (once again, I am talking about the old fashioned dorms, not the apartment style ones). Pro Right on campus. You can wake up 5 minutes before class and walk there in your boxer shorts. Pro Right on campus. Food is close by (especially if you are on a meal plan). Pro Social life. You meet a lot of new people living in the dorms. Some become friends for life. Dorms often have mini-parties and social events where everyone hangs out. Pro Its new. College is about experiencing new things. Dorm life is one of them. Pro Its cheap. Not nearly as expensive as renting an apartment. Pro Its very easy to find pick up games for sports. Pro There is an Ethernet computer network. High speed internet access and everyone is connected. Awesome for playing video games. (When I was a freshman things like Napster were brand new. People were downloading music left and right on the high speed network and sharing music like youve never seen. And as far as we knew, it was all legal). Con No privacy. People will just randomly walk in your room. Keep it locked. Con Old and dirty dorms are no fun. I got sick once a month living in there. I still have breathing problems. Con Dorms are very small. You wont be able to fit everything you have in your closet. Con Having annoying roommates that you can do nothing about. Con - Internet firewalls. Some dorms are real strict now about what you can and can not do on the schools internet. Sorry guys, no downloading music here. Con Cooking food can be quite a problem. You have no fridge or oven in your room. Con Bugs and rats. Depending on how old your dorm is (mine was built in the 40s I think) you might find rodents running around. We had a rat problem one week. I saw one run right across the floor in my room and then he disappeared into the wall. Well that is all I have for today. Come back tomorrow (or Monday) for Part II of College Roommates. If you have any questions, email me at collegesos@yahoo.com http://collegesos.com/ I am a recent graduate of the University of Florida. I am currently employed full-time but I have a strong desire for helping incoming and current college students. It is my goal to give every student a better college experience. Bread Baking Made Easy

April 11th, 2008 by latenskaret

By Beth Scott Dont you just hate it when you follow a recipe to the letter and when the bread baking is finished the bread not only looks nothing like the recipe books picture, but tastes terrible as well? There is no denying that bread baking as with baking anything is a delicate process. Bread baking involves so many things that first time bakers are often discouraged after a few failed attempts to turn out professional looking and tasting loaves. Little do they realize that if they only possessed the professional Bakers secrets bread baking would be so easy that the bread would practically make itself! For instance: How many amateur bakers know the secret to keeping bread from sticking to the pan every time? None! So when they try their hand at bread baking for the first time their bread sticks to the bread pan, and ends up a crumbled mess if they try to force it out. Then they cry and give up thinking that the problem lies with them. The shocking truth is that it doesnt! The problem lies with their lack of knowledge of THE bakers bread baking secret. The secret professional chefs and bakers wont tell you, the secret they guard so jealously. My father happened to learn this bread baking secret in his younger baking days (which is no surprise since his great great grandfather was a chef for the White House and owned his own bakery) and has passed it on to his children ever since. Okay, okay, I know youre probably screaming at me by now Beth, get on with it! Tell us the bread baking secret already! So here it is; You will need only one tool besides for the oil and bread pan you already have, and that is quite simply cornmeal (you shouldnt need more than 1/4 to 1/2 cup for two loaves of bread). Cornmeal? you ask doubtfully. YES, cornmeal! No, you do not add the cornmeal to the bread ingredients! That is not the bread baking secret. What you do is you oil your pan as usual, and you lightly sprinkle cornmeal on all of the sides and bottom inside of the bread pan. Now you can safely place your bread dough into the pans without fear of it sticking to them. While your bread is baking, instead of sticking to the pan, your bread will stick to the cornmeal and slide easily out of the pan when done baking. You may need to use a butter knife and slide it in between the pan and the bread before turning the pan over and allowing your bread to pop out. A lot of the time this will be unnecessary however and your bread will pop out just by your turning the bread pan upside down. You will probably also want to use the butter knife to scrape the excess cornmeal off the bottom and sides of the bread as you may not care for the taste of cornmeal. This bread baking secret will work whether youre baking a batter bread or a rising bread (also called yeast bread). I personally use it for both. Here is another treasured bread baking secret, this one only for batter breads: On the last ten minutes of its baking time cover the bread pan containing the batter bread with another bread pan (a steel bread pan works best), and leave it on until the bread is finished baking. This will keep the batter bread from burning or becoming too hard on top. You may vary the time you leave the steel bread pan on according to how your batter bread usually looks when it is finished. If it is a very dark brown on top and difficult to slice because the top is so hard, then 20 minutes will work best. But if it is just a little too hard on top and a little too brown the 10 minutes should suffice. Do not cover the bread at all if it usually comes out golden and soft on top after the baking is completed. You may also glaze a batter bread on top with a tablespoon of melted butter mixed with a tablespoon of honey, and sprinkle some flaked coconut or sliced nuts on top of that. To glaze you start by taking the bread out of the oven five minutes before the required baking time is finished, then spread the butter/honey mixture on top of the bread, sprinkle on your coconut or chopped nuts and bake for the remaining 5 minutes. Here is another useful bread baking tip for rising breads: If your bread loaves over rise (say because you were busy and forgot about them), then you can use a pair of scissors to cut off the excess sides, being careful not to cut any dough from off of the top. You may then use this excess dough to make rolls. You simply oil a pizza or cookie sheet and form the dough into several small balls. Rise them for another half hour and then bake on 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown. Do yourself a favor and put these tried and tested bread baking secrets immediately to use in your kitchen, and your family will rave over the results.
