Are Parabens Really Safe

By Lisa Taylor Barger You’ve probably heard the news stories about parabens and the controversy surrounding their use in personal care products. Here’s a brief, but fair, look at this complicated issue: No cosmetic can ever be truly “natural”-no matter what the manufacturer claims-but some ingredients are closer than others. Parabens have long been considered an ideal compromise and until quite recently were considered one of the safest preservative methods available. But an article published in the Journal of Applied Toxicology has cast doubt on the safety of parabens and, especially, their potential role in the development of some types breast cancers. Scientists have known for some time that parabens can mimic the effect of estrogen when used on lab animals but in early 2004, British researchers from the University of Reading announced that they had found parabens in in the cancerous tumors of human breast cancer patients. Equally concerning is the fact that researchers believe that the form of parabens found in those tumors indicate that the parabens were absorbed topically and not taken orally. But most frightening is the fact that parabens were found in EVERY sample. It’s important to note that this was a very, very small study–only 20 women–and there’s absolutely no way to tell what, if any, skin care products are implicated. Although the lead researcher has cautioned that there’s no definitive proof that parabens actually cause breast cancers, he has already called for more study. Should YOU Be Concerned? Manufacturers are. Many of the leaders in the natural products industry have already announced plans to discontinue the use of parabens and more are expected to follow suit. How do you know if your skin care products contain parabens? Read the labels. All cosmetics are required by law to carry full ingredient lists. If your skin care products don’t have ingredients listed, or you can’t find the preservative in the list, be suspicious. Be equally suspicious of manufacturers who claim to use only natural essential oils or grapefruit seed extract. In day-to-day usage, they just don’t work as promised. If you have been married for a number of years and especially if you have kids, the idea of your anniversary doesn’t seem quite as special as it used to. A lot of folks believe renewing wedding vows is something that is only appropriate on a milestone anniversary, such as the twentieth or later. The fact is, though, that renewing the vows you made at your wedding is an incredibly romantic gesture that is appropriate to any anniversary (including your first one!). Consider the following: * Even if you recall your vows, the odds are that there are a few that you miss. Renewing vows can be a great way to remember exactly what you promised. * Renewing vows will take on a whole new perspective in the context of your marriage. You are no longer the two idealistic individuals who entered into a marriage contract; instead, you are a united couple with a better understanding of exactly what those vows mean. Every year of marriage brings a better understanding of your mate and your relationship, and repeating your vows will show them in a whole new light. * Beyond a shady idea that they promised not to cheat and something about sickness and health, not many people can really remember what they said on their wedding day. This is not because the vows were not meaningful; most of the time the wedding is a bit of a blur for both the bride and the groom, so neither are likely to remember even important details. In order to renew your vows, you might want to start by finding out what you said in the first place! If your ceremony was pretty standard then this part is actually pretty easy. Find the text that the officiator used; standard vows are usually the same no matter what faith or justice you used. If you wrote your own vows, the task might be a bit harder. First, check to see if you kept copies in your personal mementos. The odds are pretty good that you did. If not, check your wedding video and with relatives to see if you can track down what you said. Remember that the renewal of vows is not just a romantic notion, it is actually a renewal — of vows! Aside from the act itself indicating “you’d do it all over again” it also offers you the opportunity to reflect on your duties and commitments and even improve the relationship through the “if I knew then what I know now” factor. Are You Afraid of Marketing, For Fear Of Growing TOO Fast?

By Fabienne Fredrickson Do you ever find yourself being afraid of marketing in a BIG way for fear of growing too big and too fast? Two clients this week expressed worry in marketing their businesses. Not because they were worried about NOT getting clients from the Client Attraction techniques were implementing together. Actually, it was the OPPOSITE. Both were worried that this Client Attraction stuff would work SO well, they would attract TOO many clients. Youd think, Well, thats a good problem to have, isnt it?, but youd be surprised at how often this comes up in my coaching with clients and group programs, and how often it keeps some of my clients literally stuck in their tracks. Inevitably, I hear things like: Im nervous. My life is so busy, how am I going to handle more clients? I know I want more, individual clients; however, on some level I think, My plate is full. How can I add something else to the plate? Thinking of adding too many clients stresses me out. What if its more than I can handle? The anxiety may come down to the fact that you havent learned how to fully manage your time quite right. It could be that your systems arent in place yet. Both are things I ruthlessly work on with clients in my coaching and infoproducts, so that by the time a prospect calls you, your time management is squared away and your SYSTEMS are in place to handle lots of clients seamlessly. However, in this case, its not just that. If you think it through objectively, the fear of having TOO many clients doesnt make sense. First, its not like youll realistically be FLOODED with hundreds of calls in a matter of days, at least not in the beginning (dont we wish?!). Speaking from experience in working with thousands of clients at this point, its usually more of a steady and consistent trickle, instead of a crashing wave, which is great. Typically, the worry of growing too big is based on a fear of change, fear of overwhelm, fear of failure, and perhaps fear of success at the same time. If you ask me, it all comes down to a fear of LOSING CONTROL. Truth is, you CAN handle it, and you ARE in complete control because YOU limit the number of clients you take on. Worse comes to worse, you can put people in groups, or put prospects on a waiting list and keep in touch with them until theres room for them. The key is to figure out what your limit of clients is and set boundaries around this limit so that your client load never gets too big without your wanting it to. Hey, Im not throwing stones. I know firsthand about the fear of growing TOO big and of losing control over my business. It became very clear to me this week that my next step is to go GLOBAL with Client Attraction (a little scary, honestly). This is not the first time Ive known that the logical next step is to go worldwide, more so than Ive allowed myself to do previously. Problem is, my fear of growth kept me playing small, even though Im capable of much, much more exposure and visibility in my business, and having the ability help many others succeed in business, while living a life they love. The thing thats stopped me in the past from going global is the fear of having to give up what I have now. Frankly, I equated going BIG with constantly being on a plane, going from place to place. Bottom line is, I dont want to be away from my husband and my kids too much. I dont want to miss out on the delicious life Ive created here. I want to be here every day to soak in the joy of what Ive taken so long to create. Those things are non-negotiable for me right now, at least until my kids get a little older. But then I started thinking about it realistically and breaking down my fear so that there was nothing left. Fact is, in this day and age, one doesnt HAVE to get on a plane to go global. Just as irrational as it is for the client mentioned above to lose control of how many clients she lets into her practice, it was just as irrational for me to think I cant take my teachings worldwide. After all, weve got the Internet, virtual teleclasses, webinars, infoproducts, you name it. I dont have to give up anything. So, my fear was null and void. Completely. And now, Im no longer playing small. Im opening myself up for massive growth and so can you. YOUR ASSIGNMENT: Start thinking about how youve stopped yourself from marketing for fear of growing TOO big, too fast. If you set up systems in your business coming from a FULL PRACTICE mentality (even if your practice isnt full yet) and you set up time management and marketing techniques that will ensure you can handle lots more clients, then you WIN.
