To Glue or Not to Glue?

Friday, December 21st, 2007

By Delmar Germyn I have tried it and not seen a huge difference in the end result. The concrete seemed to cure faster but that may have been the weather. It was during the summer and very hot out. I am sure that it was a little more waterproof and seemed to resist chipping a bit better. In hypertufa I give it a big YES! It will improve your results considerably. “Elmers” brand glue says on the label that you can use it in concrete and gives instructions. I think it said 300ml glue plus 150ml water per 10 lbs. of concrete mix. Don’t take my word for it, look it up!! I have used it as a bonding agent when pouring new concrete on top of old. First wash the old with muratic acid, rinse then paint on the white glue. It seems to help. I have seen these joints taken apart with jackhammers a couple of years later and the bond looked excellent. This was in a very harsh west coast marine application, so I say it works well! I also think that it makes a difference when added to hypertufa. My theory is that it gives back some of the strength lost due to the organic matter (peat) in Tufa. I also have an idea that it helps waterproof it a little, and that is a big benefit in outdoor projects. I made a couple of “Giant Heads” about 3 feet high with ‘Tufa. These where done over about a week, adding on every day. The ‘Tufa had glue in it. I am certain it helped to bond it better during the sculpting process. When done they seemed a little harder on the surface and water ran off better than it did on projects where there was no glue added. I can tell you they survived one -35 degree winter, they disappeared after that so I cannot report any further. Generally I would say that white glue works at least as well as you have heard. If you heard it does not work, don’t try it. I will continue to tell people to go ahead. It can’t do any harm! Copyright 2005 Delmar Germyn All rights reserved. The Symbolism of Catholic Religious Jewelry

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

By Casey Buell The cross is one of the earliest and most widely recognized Christian symbols. The use of the cross as a Christian symbol starts with Christ Himself. Since, through His death, Christ sanctified the very implement of His torture, the cross has come to signify His victory over death and sin. Early Catholic religious jewelry: Catholic religious jewelry played a large part in the protection and promotion of early Christianity. Since early Christians were often persecuted for their faith, it was not safe to openly display the cross. Early Christians instead wore other forms of Catholic religious jewelry, such as the Ichthys and the anchor. The Ichthys, two intersecting arcs resembling the profile of a fish, was probably used in Catholic religious jewelry as a reference to Christ as the fisher of men. The anchor, or mariners cross, was used in Catholic religious jewelry as a symbol of hope based in the faith in Christ. By using these forms of Catholic religious jewelry early Christians were able to avoid persecution. The cross did not become openly used in Catholic religious jewelry until around the 3rd century A.D., when the emperor Constantine made Christianity the official religion of Rome. Since then the cross has become the most significant of Christian symbols, and has been widely used in art and Catholic religious jewelry. The cross and the crucifix: Nowadays many different variations of the cross are used in Catholic religious jewelry. The most commonly used form is the Latin cross. The Latin cross is a cross with a long vertical bar intersected slightly above center by a shorter horizontal bar. The Latin cross with the body of Christ, or crucifix, is used by the Catholic Church as a representation of Christs sacrifice, while the Latin cross left blank is used by the Protestants as a representation of Christs resurrection. The Celtic cross is a cross with a circle around the cross bar. The circle represents the sun, which was worshiped by the Irish prior to their conversion to Christianity. The Calvary cross has three graded steps leading up to it. It is believed that the steps represent the hill of Calvary, the place where Jesus was crucified. These are just a few of the different types of crosses used in Catholic religious jewelry. Here is a good page to view all styles of Catholic religious jewelry. Where is the best place to purchase Catholic religious jewelry: To get an idea of the different styles and prices that are available in Catholic religious jewelry it is more convenient to view them online before shopping around at local jewelry stores. Retail jewelers will sometimes carry a small selection of Catholic religious jewelry, but you are more apt to find a greater selection online. Just type “Catholic religious jewelry ” into an Internet search engine like Google or Yahoo and you will find several reliable websites that specialize in Catholic religious jewelry. The cost of Catholic religious jewelry is dependant upon many variables. In solid 14K yellow or white gold, crucifixes and crosses should cost about $50 to $300 depending on size. A proclamation of faith: Catholic religious jewelry has a long and rich history, developing from simple anchors into a myriad of different forms and representations, each with its own story. Catholic religious jewelry began as a way for Christians to identify each other while avoiding persecution, but today we wear Catholic religious jewelry as a proud proclamation of our faith. Natural and Alternative Solutions for Defeating Anxiety

Tuesday, December 18th, 2007

By Jason Rickard Natural and alternative medicines are practical ways to control anxiety. There are many different alternative ways to treat anxiety naturally, without having to take medications. Every individual must find what suits them best. Some people combine more than one therapy with another, and this is a good idea which you may want to look into. One of the most common natural methods for dealing with anxiety is visiting a psychiatrist on a regular basis. These professional can help you find the cause of your anxiety, and will give you advice on what you can do to eliminate it, if not control it. With a disorder like anxiety, it is always a good idea to have someone who you can talk to. And not just anyone is qualified for this, possibly people with experience who have fought the disorder and maybe someone who knows exactly what you are going through. Be aware some people may try to help, but they could make things worse without knowing. That is why it is highly advised that this be left to a psychiatrist. Another natural way for dealing with anxiety is through controlled breathing. Slow, long and deep breathing can help you calm down tremendously. In Chinese medicine, breathing is said to be the bridge between the conscious and subconscious mind. The reason is because breathing is the only activity which takes place unconsciously that can be consciously controlled. When you fill your blood with excess amounts of oxygen, by taking in long deep breaths your heartbeat will begin to slow down gradually, and you will come back to your calm. This is one of the most powerful methods for controlling anxiety and an investment in this can go a long way in healing this disorder. Acupressure is also a great way for dealing with anxiety attacks. As the word suggests, it is similar to the Chinese form of healing, acupuncture, but instead it mainly makes use of applying pressure to the hands, and sometimes to other parts of the body such as the feet and elbows. This form of healing is completely natural, with no side effects and yields instantaneous results, which is the number one reason for its popularity. Acupressure activates the free flow of energy in the body, and helps in healing disorders such as anxiety and stress. The above mentioned methods for healing and controlling anxiety are amongst the best natural alternatives. It would be a very wise investment into your life, and highly advised that you seek further knowledge about the above mentioned methods. The Do’s And Dont’s Of A Cellular Phone Battery

Monday, December 17th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Neil_Day]Neil Day After the performance and features of the cell phone, nothing is more important than the life of the cellular phone battery. The longer the battery life, the more talking before it needs a recharge. Eventually your cellular phone battery will wear out. It wont hold its charge as long and your talk time will be noticeably diminished. At that point its time to get a new battery. Make sure you get the correct battery for your cell phone model. If its the wrong one, it wont fit. There are actually three different types of materials that make a cellular phone battery. The metals are nickel metal hydride, nickel cadmium and lithium ion. The lithium ion cellular phone battery is the most common because it has the longest battery life, about 3 to 5 hours of talk time. They can be recharged around 200 times before you need to purchase a new one. When you replace your cellular phone battery, make sure to dispose of the old one at the correct hazardous waste place or at a store that will accept old batteries to be disposed. The cellular phone battery should be stored at room temperature as extremes in heat and cold can damage it. Wait till the battery has completely run dry before recharging. These batteries have a memory, which means that if it normally would have 2 hours of talk time, and you recharged at 1 hours of talk time, then thats the max charging the battery will accept now. Youll be stuck at 1 hours of talk time. Read the instructions on charging and recharging the cellular phone battery and make sure you dont overcharge as well. When purchasing a replacement cellular phone battery, I would suggest buying only OEM (original equipment manufacturer). There have been problems with third party cell phone batteries blowing up. They were sold and made specifically for a certain phone model, but if the battery was manufactured incorrectly it will overheat and blow up during charging. OEM batteries are more expensive, but I think they are well worth the cost. You can charge up your cellular phone battery with an AC adapter (desktop charger) or car adapter charger. You will generally have to buy the car adapter separately but I have found it to be invaluable on trips. You can buy the car charger from the same store that you bought the cell phone. Make sure you check the make and model number so that you buy the correct one for your phone. Happy Birthday to You-It’s Party Time!

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

By Gail Leino A birthday party doesnt have to be a boring affair that everyone dreads coming to. Jazz it up with a theme and something memorable for all of the guests. If you want to stick with Happy Birthday as your theme, make it a famous one. Find pictures of famous people celebrating birthdays - A movie star blowing out candles or a musician throwing their own party. Make them into posters and hang around the room or house hosting the party. Make it a game and have the guests guess who each actor and star is. Another fun game would be to find all of the TV and song clips of stars singing and make it a guessing game. Without showing who is singing, have people guess. Some famous renditions include Shirley Temple and Marilyn Monroe. To decorate for a birthday party you need balloons and streamers. A party supply store will have every color imaginable to match your theme. Paper products like cups, napkins, silverware and tablecloths are also available for purchase to match. If you need assistance, any party planner would be glad to help. Birthday parties can serve a meal or snacks. If you are having a small party, dinner can be planned. If it is a large party, finger foods or appetizers are cheaper and easier to provide for everyone. They make less of a mess too! Birthday parties also require a cake! Hire a cake baker or create one yourself using pans from the party supply store. They come in large and small and have pattern books if you are looking for ideas. Candles, frosting and other cake decorations are also available. Remember to take pictures of all your guests to include in a thank you card. Whether it is a party where they bring gifts or not, send them a note thanking them for sharing in your big day. Lead Generation 101

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

By Paul Lemberg Part seven of a series on Turnaround Tactics Once you get your streamlined sales force up to speed, it’s going to need more people to talk to. You already have a lead generation program in place. But is it working? Is it sufficient? Probably not, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading an article called “turnaround tactics.” So you have to stoke the lead machine. Step one is to decide what a lead is worth to you, so you can know what to spend on getting one. Do you know the lifetime value of your typical customer? Do this calculating for revenue and profit: add the initial sale plus all subsequent add upsells, resells, back-end products, over the entire life of your customer. Average this across your customer base, and voila - lifetime customer value. Your fist sale may be $50,000, but with service alone over five years that figure will double. Throw in an upgrade, and two further product sales down the road, plus some consulting fees - the number could exceed $250,000. But don’t use these estimates - do the math and find out. You also need to know your conversion ratios. How many suspects make a lead, how many leads make a new customer, and so on. Break down your conversion ratios by lead source, as your customers from referrals will typically convert better than public speaking leads, which will convert better than trade show leads, and so on. Combine cost per lead and conversion ratios and you know what the cost of acquiring a new customer is. Which tells you how much you can spend to get that customer, as well as which lead sources are most efficient. Now you know what to do more of, and what programs to kill off. It’s time to add new programs. In truth, there are a fairly limited number of ways to get new leads. The typical-and generally effective methods include: * referrals programs; * endorsement programs; * direct mail; * direct email; * web site promotion (both search engine and pay-per-click); * advertising (all forms: print, radio, TV, web, email, billboard, skywriting, you name it); * telemarketing; * by-lined articles, editorials and other press mentions; * public seminars, conference and association public speaking; * trade shows; * lead swapping; * couponing; * directory listings; and, * joint ventures and strategic alliances. Of course there are other more exotic ways to generate leads, and I’m sure you can come up with your own. In addition to the programs you already have in place, your next move will be to start testing new systems. Some of the fastest ways to generate leads are based on your existing relationships: affiliates, strategic alliances, endorsement programs and referral programs. I would try these first. And if you are a good public speaker, I’d look to get out in front of your target market with a smart message. Now that you’ve honed your selling proposition, this should be easy. Pick two programs and track very carefully. If one work wells and cost-effectively, increase your resources for this program. If they don’t perform, kill them quickly and try another approach. Spiritual Healing at a Spa

Friday, December 14th, 2007

By Melissa Steele While some spas focus on physical and mental health, there are other spas that focus on spiritual health. Spiritual spas encourage their visitors to pursue a spiritual journey of introspection and reflection by participating in the activities that are available during their spa visit. The types of activities available depend on the type of spiritual spa you visit. Most spas focus on Asian techniques for meditation and relaxation. At these spas, you can involve yourself in relaxing and introspective techniques such as meditation, tai chi, chi gong, yoga, etc. Instructors guide you through these techniques that lead to serenity, understanding, and acceptance. They also teach you to carry these activities into your daily life. Many also use physical methods of raising your spiritual consciousness. For example, some spiritual spas employ shamans who perform techniques that are meant to erase the things from your past that hinder your present life. Some services are meant to balance and cleanse the body of the imprints that predispose us to negative physical and emotional conditions. Others are said to uncover the source of past wounding or trauma and retrieve lost energy. Finally, some techniques are meant to incorporate the energy of who you want to become and reveal obstacles and opportunities along the path. Other types of spiritual spas focus more on Western religious beliefs. These spas focus their services on encouraging their visitors to connect with and grow closer to the Christian God. They encourage people to pursue whole life health, clear purpose, and an authentic connection with God. The activities available at these types of spiritual spas are similar to Eastern methods of relaxation and meditation. They generally encourage painting, hiking, and prayer as method of introspection and reflection. Spiritual spas that focus on Western religious beliefs generally offer services on all aspects of a person’s life. Many of their activities involve reading the Bible as a means of finding answers in life. The activity moderators can help people to find answers in the Bible for their specific life struggles, such as problems in marriage, friendship, parenting, employment, or grief. Others use the Bible as a source of promoting feelings of hope, love, kindness, courage, wisdom, and trust in their daily lives. Before visiting a spiritual spa, be sure to determine what spiritual activities the spa focuses on. Persons interested in visiting a spa where they can learn Eastern methods of relaxation are not going to be satisfied with reading the Bible for a week. Spiritual healing at a spa required full devotion to the spas programs. Five Plants for your Desert Backyard

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

By Cheryl Cholley Living in the desert Southwest can be interesting, exhilarating, and sometimes trying. Take for example, your Desert Backyard. Sure, you may want to have an emerald green expanse of lawn and trees, offset by a lovely rose garden or expansive beds of petunias and violets. Don’t get me wrong, I love a well-kept lawn, but in the desert - it’s just somehow wrong. Most cities in the Southwest have restrictions on water use, or at the very least your neighbors will frown on extravagant use of the precious fluid. So let’s take a look at what you can do to make your yard blend in with your surroundings and create interest to passers-by as well as for your own family. Here are five of my favorite plants for a distinctive desert landscape 1. Soaptree Yucca - This plant has long narrow spiky leaves attached to a main trunk-like body. The leaves are similar in appearance to an aloe, but thin, without the succulent centers. At the top of the main trunk a long stalk shoots up and at the top of the stalk a bunch of white flowers sprouts in the spring. 2. Ocotillo - A member of the cactus family, this plant is characterized by its long spiny “fingers” that grow from a single point at its base. As many as 75 of these canes can grow on one plant. Ocotillo occasionally sprouts tiny leaves all along the canes, especially after a rain. The ends of the canes sprout red flowers in spring to early summer. 3. Verbena - A flowering shrub that makes a good bedding plant or ground cover. Plants normally grow to one or two feet tall and a foot and a half wide. Some varieties grow to a height of four or five feet. Flowers range from yellow and white, to orange, red, and scarlet. 4. Palo Verde - A tree whos name means green stick in Spanish. It is a spiny green multi-trunked deciduous tree. The leaves are tiny, growing in matched pairs on both sides of a main stem. The flowers are yellow and proliferous. They produce a pod that contains six or eight seeds in each one similar to peas or beans. 5. Mexican Bird of Paradise - A perennial evergreen plant that is drought resistant, easy to grow and lovely to look at. The leaves are similar to ferns. The flowers are yellow with orange and red centers. With a selection of the right desert plants, your backyard can be virtually maintenance free and perpetually beautiful to behold. The 15 Most Powerful Healing Herbs in Your Kitchen

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

By J.A. Elliott Since ancient times our ancestor’s harvested the many herbs and spices that grew wild around them, mixed potions, and treated ailments. Man was after all a hunter-gatherer, and an omnivore, (an organism which gets its food energy from both plant and animal material). The humble herb and spice rack in your kitchen today need not be just a decorative feature, although they look quite pleasing to the eye hanging on the wall, in both modern and old fashioned styled homes. They can in fact hold a plethora of natural healing ingredients that can also add great taste to the foods you eat every day. Of all the herbs and spices you can choose from for flavour, there are 15 that are more powerful than the rest. Below is the list and you may well be surprised to learn of the many diverse conditions for which they’ve proven so very useful. 1/. BASIL Basil is an herbal carminative, that is, it can relieve gas and soothe stomach upsets. One possible explanation for its calming effect is a compound called eugenol, which has been shown to help ease muscle spasms. Research is still preliminary, but laboratory studies also suggest that compounds found in basil may help disrupt the dangerous chain of events that can lead to the development of cancer 2/. CAYENNE Cayenne pepper is a hot red powder made from tropical chilli peppers. It contains alkaloid capsaicin, which relieves pain by blocking the chemicals that send pain messages to the brain. If you eat cayenne at the first sign of any type of headache, with plenty of water as a chaser, this spicy herb may be an effective alternative treatment. Added to food, cayenne perks up appetite, improves digestion and relieves gas, nausea, and indigestion. The herb also thins phlegm and eases its passage from the lungs, thus helping to prevent and treat coughs, colds and bronchitis. 3/. CINNAMON Cinnamon bark contains an oily chemical called cinnamaldehyde that kills a variety of illness causing bacteria, including the dreaded E.coli, Salmonella, and Staphylococcus aureas. Research shows that cinnamon is also able to stop the growth of the Asian flu virus. Herbalists report that cinnamon bark also helps regulate the menstrual cycle and checks flooding during menopause. Also cinnamaldehyde has a tranquilizing effect that helps reduce anxiety and stress. 4/. CLOVE Oil of clove is 60 to 90 percent eugenol. A potent pain deadening antimicrobal. Clove has earned the official endorsement of the FDA as an effective stopgap measure for tooth pain. Clove is also among the spices that can help the body use insulin more effectively, thus lowering blood sugar somewhat. In one lab study, clove was also found to speed healing of the dreaded cold sores. 5/. DILL Dill has been used to soothe the digestive tract and treat heartburn, colic and gas for thousands of years. In fact, the word dill comes from the Old Norse word dilla, meaning to lull or soothe. The herb has an antifoaming action that suggests why it might help break up gas bubbles. Like parsley, dill is rich in chlorophyll, which also makes it useful in treating bad breath. 6/. FENNEL Rich in volatile oils, fennel is what’s known as a carminative herb, meaning that it can ease bloating, gas pains, and digestive spasms in the small and large intestines. Fennel can also reduce bad breath and body odour that originates in the intestines. Women who are breastfeeding may find that fennel, which works in a way similar to the body’s hormones, increases milk flow. 7/. GARLIC Intact garlic cloves contain an odourless, sulphur-containing amino acid called alliin. When the garlic is crushed, alliin becomes allicin. Research shows that allicin helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure and also helps prevents blood clots. Garlic can also reduce the risk of developing atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries). Compounds in this familiar bulb kill many organisms, including bacteria and viruses that cause earaches, flu and colds. Research indicates that garlic is also effective against digestive ailments and diarrhoea. What’s more, further studies suggest that this common and familiar herb may help prevent the onset of cancers. 8/. GINGER When it comes to quelling the queasiness of motion sickness, ginger has no equal say herbalists. In fact, researchers have demonstrated that ginger beats dimenhydrate, the main ingredient in motion sickness drugs such as Dramamine, for controlling symptoms of seasickness and motion sickness. Ginger stimulates saliva flow and digestive activity, settles the stomach, relieves vomiting, eases pain from gas and diarrhoea, and is effective as an anti-nausea remedy. This aromatic herb also helps lower cholesterol. Herbalists have also found it to be useful as a pain reliever. 9/. MINT Herbalists the world over use mint, as a premier stomach tonic, to counteract nausea and vomiting, promote digestion, calm stomach muscle spasms, relieve flatulence, and ease hiccups. Menthol, the aromatic oil in peppermint, also relaxes the airways and fights bacteria and viruses. Menthol interferes with the sensation from pain receptors, thus it may be useful in reducing headache pain. Scientific evidence suggests that peppermint can kill many kinds of micro-organisms, and may boost mental alertness. In one study, people who inhaled menthol said they felt as if it relieved their nasal congestion, although it didn’t increase their measurable airflow. 10/. OREGANO Oregano contains at least four compounds that soothe coughs and 19 chemicals with antibacterial action that may help reduce body odour. The ingredients in oregano that soothe coughs may also help un-knot muscles in the digestive tract, making oregano a digestive aid. This familiar spice also contains compounds that can lower blood pressure too. 11/. PARSLEY Diuretic herbs such as parsley prevent problems such as kidney stones and bladder infections and keep our body’s plumbing running smoothly by causing it to produce more urine. They also relieve bloating during menstruation. Also there’s a reason for that parsley on the edge of the diner plate, its not just there for fancy decoration; it’s an effective breath freshener because it contains high levels of chlorophyll. 12/. ROSEMARY Rosemary is one of the richer herbal sources of antioxidants, which have been shown to prevent cataracts, and contains 19 chemicals with antibacterial action that help fight infection. Traditionally used to ease asthma, this common culinary ingredient has volatile oils that can reduce the airway constriction induced by histamine, that chemical culprit of asthma and other allergy symptoms. Herbalists think that rosemary may also help ease breast pain by acting as a natural drying agent to fluid filled cysts. 13/. SAGE The oils found in sage are both antiseptic and antibiotic, so it can help fight infections. Sage is effective for symptoms of menopause, night sweats and hot flashes, because of its estrogenic action and because its tannins can dry up perspiration. There’s also compelling evidence that sage may b of value to people with diabetes for whom the hormone insulin does not work as efficiently as it should. Lab studies indicate that sage may boost insulin’s action. 14/. THYME Thyme contains thymol, which increases blood-flow to the skin. The warmth is comforting, and some herbalists believe that the increased blood-flow speeds healing. An anti-spasmodic. Thyme relaxes respiratory muscles and is endorsed for treating bronchitis by Commission E, the expert panel that judges the safety and effectiveness of herbal medicines for the German government. Aromatherapists say that thyme’s scent is a mood lifter. 15/. TURMERIC Many clinical studies agree that curcumin in turmeric has anti-inflammatory effects, including a significant beneficial effect in relieving rheumatoid arthritis and carpal tunnel syndrome. Curcumin, which gives this spice its familiar yellow pigment, may also lower cholesterol. Turmeric is also packed with antioxidants, including vitamins A, C, and E, which have been shown to prevent cataracts. Passed down to us by our forefathers and countless generations throughout the world, these 15 food additives and enhancers are just a selected few that are currently known to have medicinal and beneficial properties, yet represent the more commonly used. By including these herbs and spices into your daily cooking or diet on a regular basis, you will greatly enhance your quality of life, and reduce the need for those expensive, and often damaging pharmaceutical drugs. Wooden Garden Bridges - A Beautiful Touch For Your Garden

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

By Anne Clarke My garden has a simple Koi fish pond, plenty of flowers, a porch swing and a beautiful pine wood bridge. I believe that wooden bridges are a beautiful touch for any garden pond, Japanese-style dry river bed, miniature garden, or even above your waterfall or reflecting pool. The garden bridges I have seen range in style and beauty, elegance and simplicity, length and width, made for all kinds of gardens. A wooden bridge will be a perfect addition for your garden that will best suit your needs for virtually any outdoor dcor, garden design, and can even be custom designed to fit perfectly among the specialized creations in your yard. There are wonderful wooden bridges available to suit the smallest possible waters or ponds to the most elaborate waterfalls, reflecting pools, and they can be used in any dry garden dcor. In other words, you do not have to have a pond, waterfall, or even a dry, stone garden to create a beautiful new look with a wooden garden bridge. When you find a place for the perfect garden, waterfall, a reflecting pool you prefer or if you already have one of these consider a bridge for your garden dcor. There are four post as well as six post wooden bridges designed in pine, redwood and more. Most of the outdoor bridges on the market today are available at very decent prices. In addition you can build your own garden bridges with kits, materials, equipment and instructions. Build-your-own garden bridge projects are not only fun, but they can also save you a lot of money. A wonderful place for meditation, reflection, contemplation, or just to relax and unwind, a wooden bridge contributes to the overall ambiance of any yard or garden. Relaxing at home in your own beautiful outdoor creations, whether your garden is floral, rock, contemporary or cultural a wooden bridge is always a lovely addition.
