Business Brochure Writing: Why It’s Important That a 5th Grader Understands Your Brochure

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

By Sandra Eggers No matter whats your business or service, you need to write your brochure at a level that even a 5th grader can understand. Now I hear you saying . . .But I dont know of any 5th grader in the market for single premium immediate annuities. Thats probably true. And, if there were, it undoubtedly is a very, very niche market of 1 or 2, maybe. So you definitely cant build your business on selling single premium immediate annuities to 5th graders. But neither can you afford to talk to your ideal prospect as though he or she is an actuary with a Ph.D. And even if he or she was that actuary with a Ph.D, chances are your ideal prospect would appreciate simple, clear communication. And certainly not because your prospect is a bale short of a full load. Its because your prospect like all of us these days is avalanched with information. And needs to live life at warp speed, just to keep up with the day-to-day. So the clearer, the simpler, your brochure copy, the easier and quicker it is for your prospect to grasp how you can solve his or her problem. And the easier and quicker it is that youll make that sale. And 5th grade level is where its at. Its about where the average newspapers reading level is these days. Ok. So it all sounds good in theory. How can you make it happen? Ill be glad to help you. =============================================================== The Flesch-Kincaid Test ================================================================ According to the Wikipedia, the Flesch/Flesch-Kincaid Readability Tests are designed to show how difficult a reading passage is to understand. There are two tests, the Flesch Reading Ease and the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level. Both these systems were designed by Rudolph Flesch, an author, readability expert and writing consultant who was among the first champions of using plain English. One of his more popular books was Why Johnny Cant Read. You, too, can apply the Flesch system to your own writing. (And you dont have to be a reading expert versed in scientific testing to do so.) All you need to do is to use Microsoft Word. And heres what you do: After youve written the final draft of your brochure copy, go to your drop-down menu under Tools and click on: Spelling and Grammar. Let it run through its paces. (Caution: Dont make this the only way you proof your brochure.) After its gone through your copy, a box will pop up with all sorts of information. At the very bottom is your Flesch-Kincaid readability score. It shows it according to grade level. If your score is higher than 5th or 6th, at the highest then you need to rework your sentences into shorter, clearer sentences, shorter paragraphs, more basic English. This little feature in Word is very, very useful for keeping your copy as understandable as possible. ================================================================= The 5th Grader Test ================================================================ Another good test is The 5th Grader Test. (Yes, actual 5th Graders were used in this process. However, none were harmed during the testing.) If you know of someones child or grandchild who fits the bill, why not ask them to read your brochure copy? Ask them: Do you understand what my business about? Do you know what I sell, do?If you were my customer, would you buy what I have? Why or why not? If you were my customer, what do I want you to do after you read the brochure? This 5th graders answers to these questions will be very insightful for you. Theyll give you a sense if you told your story clearly, particularly what your business is all about, and tell you if you were clear in your call to action. These parts are some of the most vital in your brochure. Adding Personal Touches to Your Wedding

Monday, November 12th, 2007

By Lesley-Ann Graham A perfect wedding isn’t only beautiful, it’s a very personal occasion too. It’s got carefully selected details that are meaningful to you and your fianc. Here are some very simple ways to add your own subtle, unique touches to your wedding ceremony and reception: 1. Write your own wedding vows. It doesn’t have to read like poetry; the important thing is that it comes from your own heart. Print it out on an index card and keep it handy during the ceremony. 2. Compile a CD with songs that symbolize your relationship or how it evolved. Play this during your reception, or even burn a copy and distribute as souvenirs. Insert a small piece of paper explaining why you chose those songs. 3. Instead of tossing your bouquet, present it to your mother (or a dear friend or mentor) during your reception. You can also have an additional bouquet made for your groom to present his mother at the same time. 4. Guests often have free time on their hands during their reception. In the center of the table, place several pens and small pieces of paper in a pretty basket. Ask them to write their wishes, prayers, or advice for you and your fianc. Compile in a scrapbook. 5. Most wedding reception programs revolve around the couple: friends give speeches. Do something for the guests. Make a video of you and your fianc talking about the people who’ve taught you what true love means. Mention friends who’ve demonstrated real loyalty, or family members who made great sacrifices for you. Intersperse your video with their photos. This is your chance to say thank you to all of them. 6. If you have a close friend or family member who passed away, make him or her part of the occasion by inserting a small photo in your bouquet, or lighting a tribute candle at the church ceremony. 7. If you have ethnic roots, incorporate a marriage ritual from your culture into your ceremony or perform it during your reception. 8. Wear an heirloom. For example, you can use your grandmother’s veil, or wear a locket that belongs to your mother. This is an excellent way of creating a sense of continuity between generations, celebrating your own family even as you go on to begin your own. 9. Prepare an audio-video presentation that will be played during the last dance of the bride with the father. This can be just a simple montage of childhood photos. A guaranteed tear-jerker! 10. If you have kids, help them feel like they’re part of the new family by asking them to stand next to you as you say your vows. 11. Add little elements that say something about your relationship as a couple. For example, if you’re giving away picture frames, insert a poem that you wrote or a copy of your wedding vows. If you met at a beach (and would rather not have a beach-themed wedding) incorporate shells into your table centerpiece. A Great Diet, A Feel Good Mood, While You Lose Weight

Monday, November 12th, 2007

By Carolyn McClendon A Great Diet, A Feel Good Mood, While You Lose Weight A great diet and a feel good mood while you lose weight is a tall but achievable goal. These three aspects of weight loss are all necessary for your success. So how do you succeed? Finding a great diet starts out with sticking to the basics of taking in less calories than you burn. Eating the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables. A great diet and a feel good mood while you lose weight is a tall but achievable goal. These three aspects of weight loss are all necessary for your success. So how do you succeed? The key to keeping your fruits and vegetables low in calories is to not load them up with sugar and fat. Salad dressings and dips, high in fat and sugar can ruin your diet with unnecessary calories. A little vinegar or lemon juice along with some herbs and just a little extra virgin olive oil can be used to dress a salad and fruit doesn’t really need a dip when you’re dieting. Fruits and vegetables are also high in vitamins and minerals for health and vitality to make you feel good. The fiber in fruits and vegetables give you the bulk to help you feel full and keep what you eat flowing through your digestive tract. Having regular bowel movements also helps you to have a feel good mood. Nothing ruins a good day like constipation. Some diets, like the popular low carb diets rely heavily on protein. Protein has almost no roughage so there’s nothing for your digestive tract to work with and you can get constipated. If you choose not to eat the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables, then take a product that provides extra bulk and be sure to drink plenty of water with it. Another way to feel good on a diet is by seeing fast results. Almost nothing perks up a dieter faster than shedding pounds and inches. Consider doing a cleansing, detox type of diet to speed up your weight loss. These diets are all over the women’s magazines these days. People are having great success shedding fat by releasing toxins and wastes from their bodies. Although it’s a relatively new approach to weight loss, done right it’s a very sound approach and is not a fad diet. A cleansing, detox diet works on the belief that toxins are stored in your fat cells and by releasing the debris from your body you also flush the fat or can burn it off more easily. With the right program it’s not uncommon to shed 7 to 10 pounds in as little as nine days. This could put any dieter in a good mood. When doing a cleansing, detox diet remember not to detox for too long a period of time as it could flush out some nutrients as well. Also you want to have periods where you load up on super nutrition to build up those cleaned out cells. With a detox type diet you can actually end up healthier than when you started. Some nutrients known for their body cleansing ability are: aloe vera, Pau d’Arco, and burdock. Some people simply sip lemon in water for a cleaning effect. It’s best to stick to a proven program when you’re detoxing to get the best results. Always check with your health care professional before starting any diet or weight loss plan. Seeing the inches decrease and the pounds go down quickly is the best mood maker. These tips help you combine a great diet, a feel good mood while you lose weight and who doesn’t want that. As you’re jumping for joy over your weight loss and getting into great shape with your diet, you’re increasing your opportunity to continue living a long, happy life. Motivation the Key or the Curse?

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

By Cass Hope Life would be perfect if only I was thin. That one thought passes through the minds of millions everyday when they think of weight loss. The really sad part about it is that they truly believe that it is the truth. On television, in magazines, everywhere we look the message is clear that only thin people can have happy lives. This is not to say that weight loss in general is a bad thing, that is not the point I am trying to make at all. It is the motivation behind the decision to lose weight that can be as important as the plan you decide to follow. The motivation for weight loss can be the determining factor as to whether or not you can successfully lose the weight and more importantly whether you can keep it off. For example you have made a firm decision to lose weight and you have committed yourself to stick with the plan you have chosen. It takes a lot of hard work and determination but at last you have achieved your goal weight. So now all you have to do is sit back and wait for your fairy tale life to begin. The perfect mate, the perfect job, the social lifeyour dreams come true because now you are no longer overweight! It will all be worth the workyou just have to wait now. So you wait and you wait but the fairy tale never comes. Only the outside has changed, you are still you on the inside. This realization can have devastating results on may people. Not only is the incentive to keep the weight off gone but often people can end up surpassing their original weight. Depression usually sets in and sadly sometimes-even suicide. Society needs to realize that weight loss is not about popularity. It is about eating well and exercising which in turn makes you feel better overall so of course you feel better about yourself. The extra energy gives a boost to your life and yes you may see an improvement in your social life but that is all because of how you feel not how you look. You are the one in control of whether or not you are happy and nothing outside of your mind and heart can interfere with that unless you chose to let it. Skinny people are unhappy too. Weight loss should be all about health not fairy tales. Happiness comes in all shapes and sizes. Cass Hope is a registered massage therapist who has studied and counseled in nutrition. I Dated a Peeping Tom

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

By February Fontaine Imagine being in your bedroom and sitting at your vanity brushing your long shoulder length hair. You are only wearing a 3 piece black Opaque cami-garter top, G-string, and stockings. As you brush your hair you see in your vanity mirror the shadow of a man peering in at you through your bedroom window directly behind you. You can feel him undressing what little you have on with his eyes. Your heart skips a beat as you moisten your lips with your tongue. Doesn’t the above sound exciting? I had a very imaginative boyfriend who liked to role play and one of his favorites was playing a peeping tom to my innocent young lady undressing in her bedroom. As I live in an apartment building lucky for him my balcony was right outside my bedroom. Otherwise he would have had to have done some high wire acrobats. Another favorite role playing game for him was to play pizza delivery boy. He would come over to my apartment and buzz me saying he was the pizza delivery boy. When I answered the door wearing a black see through mesh Teddy with a lace high neck and a v-back lace thong the pizza party would begin. And there wasn’t much pizza being eaten. He once suggested that we have a theme date. He decided he would dress as a criminal and I would dress as a pirate and we would go to town and have a good time. When he arrived at my apartment he was wearing a black fedora, a double-breasted striped gangster jacket with a red shirt and black tie and matching striped pants. He was also carrying a tiny black toy tommy gun. When I came out of the bedroom to greet him I was wearing 5 inch black knee high pirate boots, a Captain Jack pirate hat, a black patch over my right eye and nothing else. Needless to say the only place we went to town to have a good time that night was my bedroom. Shiver me timbers! Having a fun date is easy to do. All you need is a little imagination and the right lingerie. (c) All rights reserved. To read more about February Fontaine and her lingerie please go to My Sexy Lingerie. Is Your Wife Or Husband Cheating? Find Out Today!

Thursday, November 8th, 2007

By Abby Fris Twenty years ago having a relationship with a loved one amongst other things meant being faithful to that person. Unfortunately, times have changed. A Stanford University survey published by the Globe and Mail newspaper revealed that an average of 40% of married woman and 50-60% of married men had at least one promiscuous liaison. Yes, these are impressive figures! In today’s world it is as tough as it gets to find a truly faithful partner. In today’s reality it has become so easy to have an affair and get away with it. Amongst so many other things that did not exist 20 years ago, much of the blame can be attributed to the internet. We all have connection to the web, be it at home or at the office. The accessibility to groups of people looking for what the potential cheater is looking is a mouse click away. Be it in chat rooms, discussion groups, paid dating websites, or any other venue it is as simple as it gets to find a partner to have an extra marital affair with. I would say that the email is probably one of the communication vehicles that facilitate the cheating process the most. Before emails arrived to our lives it was rather tough to keep in touch with someone without it being to risky. For example, using the home phone was not an option and receiving calls to the work place was very risky. However, today with the help of the email people can have secret accounts and use them for daily correspondence with their cheating partner. Another very popular tool amongst e-Cheaters is the various messenger services where live one on one chats are possible. Fortunately, the internet has also brought good investigation tools for the suspecting partner. Few people are aware of this but today it has become quite easy to find out if your loved one is having an affair or is in the process of building one. These tools can be used very discreetly and can be incredibly efficient. The problem with people that cheat, specially the e-Cheaters, is that they are not built for the lie! This means that most think they cover well their traces but trust me, only a few truly do. This makes the process of catching them so much easier. In fact, it can many times take no more than ten minutes to find out the truth. Did you know that today you can easily find out exactly what your partner was doing on the computer, what websites were visited, for how long, etc? Well, yes, it is quite simple to find out and if you devote just a bit of additional effort you can also know the places he or she visited even if they try to hide these destinations. I tell you, it is truly impressive what can be done today with the help of very cheap and easy to use computer tools. I guarantee, cheaters are not sophisticated people. If you have some doubt your partner is cheating on you there are so many methods offline and online to help you uncover the truth sometimes faster than you can imagine. Even if you think you know who your partner is, remember the statistics. More than 80% of people who found out their partner was being unfaithful admit the news was a complete surprise to them. Caring for Your Water Garden Pond

Wednesday, November 7th, 2007

By Sandra Dinkins-Wilson Each water garden pond you create while gardening must be thought of as a mini-ecosystem. There are many factors that must reach equilibrium in order to have a healthy environment and to have a beautiful water garden. Otherwise you may wind up killing any fish you include and having a sick, algae overgrown mess that is neither attractive nor does much for your gardening efforts. In this article we are sharing some basic water garden pond care tips that you probably have seen before if you have done any reading about water gardens. Understand these tips go toward achieving a beautiful water garden pond by balancing your water garden plants, the fish you may wish to include, the bacteria that also play an important part and other items. First off be sure to dechlorinate your water that you include in the pond. This is especially important if you include fish and other creatures. Either allow the water, once your pond is built, to sit for a few weeks or use some type of dechlorination kit to achieve your end. However you may find your city water supplies have been treated with chloramine. Chloramine can remain in the water for months and you should use a chloramine remover. Fish can be added within 20 minutes of using a chlorimine remover depending upon how well it is circulated through the pond. This is important if and when you may have to drain a pond to clean it out. Don’t add fish right away to a new pond. See more information below. You will want to test the pH of your pond water. Keeping it above 7 and in the 7 to 10 range will help keep the algae down in the pond. Realize when your pond is just starting you do need to give some time for the algae to come into balance and you may have a heavy algae bloom for the first two to six weeks. As long as the pH is as above, this should clear up. You can add submerged plants that will help remove the nutrients the algae uses and help filter the water. You can actually think of algae as a sign of how well you have maintained the balance within your water garden pond after the first few weeks. Too much floating on top and you have a problem. Once you begin to add fish and plants to the pond, the first rule is “Don’t crowd”. You can always add more later on if it appears you have the room. Fish will grow and so will the plants. You will get a lush appearance eventually but trying to force it right away can cause diseases among your fish and perhaps even encourage too much algae growth. Fact is you will want to be sure that you do not completely cover over the surface of the water garden pond even later. At least one third of the water surface should be clear. This allows the sun to penetrate and reach any submerged plants you have added to your pond. It also allows gases to escape and oxygen to enter the water. This all goes toward achieving that mini-ecosystem balance. Lastly, don’t be in a rush to get your plants and fish into the pond. It would be best to give your water garden pond time to settle in and mellow. Add plants next and give them time to come into balance. Adding fish should best be done in late spring or early summer when the temperature of the pond reaches 50 degrees. So much depends on the type of fish you plan to add, the type of water garden pond you have, and where you are located. Copyright 2006, Sandra Dinkins-Wilson Looking for more Water Garden articles? Creating a Great Watercolor Workspace

Tuesday, November 6th, 2007

By Charlene Thomforde Watercolor Art Timesaving Tip 1 Finding time to paint can be a challenge. If you have to clear off your counter, drag out your paints and set up your palette every time you want to paint, most of your time will be used up before your brush even hits the paper. If you can set aside a space or a whole room where you won’t be easily distracted, you can sneak in a few minutes here and there. Ideally, you will be able to close a door, but a even a corner of a room is better than nothing. That way you can leave your supplies in place and you will always be ready to go. Here are some tips for setting up a studio you will love to work in: 1. Make your space the happiest place in the house. Hang plants and inspiring pictures, and place your favorite objects around to fill the room and make it inviting. 2. Be sure your lighting is good. A task light with a full spectrum bulb works well for low light days and evenings. The ideal natural light is steady north light which comes from the left of your table if you are right handed. 3. Keep a small table beside your work table or easel to hold your supplies. You don’t want to crowd your working surface. 4. Work standing as much as possible. Sitting down keeps you from using the full movement of your arms and body and cramps your style and spontaneity. I like to have my table at standing height with an adjustable chair, so I can sit to do areas of detail or if I need to rest. If you must sit to paint, its easy to stand back to look at what you are doing when you work at standing level. 5. Playing music or talk radio can be beneficial. Sometimes too much quiet can cause you to think too much which can block your free flow of creativity. Great music can also inspire you to greater art. The most important thing is to enjoy being in your working space. Because if you don’t, you won’t want to spend time there! Electronic Medical Records

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Kent_Pinkerton] Kent Pinkerton Electronic medical records are computer-based patient medical records. Physicians offices and hospitals throughout the United States are increasingly using them because they offer certain advantages over conventional paper-based medical records. Such records are also useful in processing health insurance claims and following up with patients. A key benefit to medical providers is the instant availability of data once it is entered electronically, and the space and labor savings resulting from the elimination of paper-based records. Electronic medical records are readily accessible, increasingly standardized for seamless use where and when required, and greatly reduce the likelihood of error in either entry or interpretation of medical information. Having a patients medical and contact information readily available can be potentially life-saving during critical medical events such as severe allergic reactions or heart attacks. By reducing errors and saving time, electronic medical records may therefore help reduce the large number of deaths attributed to medical error in the United States each year. In order to enter medical information into an electronic medical record, special software is required. The electronic medical records software industry is rapidly growing, and such software is becoming increasingly sophisticated. While basic software allows for entry of physician orders and notes and nurses notes, more advanced software may include error-checking programs, the capacity to synchronize with hand-held data devices, and other advanced features that increase the utility of records. As electronic medical records are more widely used, concerns regarding the protection of patients confidential medical information and privacy have increased. In 1996, the US Congress passed the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), and a more stringent Privacy Rule went into effect in 2003. HIPAA sets required national standards for medical records, guarantees patients the right to see their own medical records, and requires providers to inform patients how their medical information is used and disclosed.
